How to get over your fear of the dentist March 18, 2010 No Comments

Your dentist should not be someone you compare to a monster in a horror movie. Fear of the dentist is extremely common and mostly derives from a lack of understanding as to what a dentist does. You should look into dentistry reading and learn a little about it. This will help you to understand what the dentist is doing in your mouth.

Once you understand some of the basic tools and techniques a dentist uses, then you are ready to look into going to the dentist. So how do you decide which stranger you let into your mouth? One way is to talk to family and friends that you trust. They all have teeth like you and see a dentist. Ask them to recommend a decent dentist; someone they have used and are comfortable with. If the dentist was good enough for them, then it should put your mind at ease.

So now you’ve decided to go to the chosen dentist and you make and appointment. You get to the office, and as you get closer to getting into his chair your anxiety grows. This is when you remember the things that millions of people do this every day. Your friends or family recommended the dentist. Breath. Everything is OK. Just relax and let the professional dentist do his job.

The dentist may use air-powered tools inside your mouth. You will feel weird sensations or hear unusual noises. Don’t panic. This is where the research you did before comes in. Simple research will tell you that the wet spray you feel in your mouth is water from the tool. This allows for a lubricated surface so that the dentist can polish, clean or grind a cavity on your tooth. Then the suction sensation coming from the tube in your mouth is a tool used to suck out the water that the other tool is spraying. If you constantly spray water into the mouth, it will eventual fill up and over flow. The suction tube sucks this out, so you never have too much water in your mouth.

See, it is all extremely simple and understandable. Try to understand the basic things happening in a dentist’s office and you wont be so afraid.

Seeking Guidance : What to expect from a Consultation
A consultation is a time when you can learn both about the doctor you are choosing, and about the cosmetic surgery you intend to receive. During a consultation three things should happen, you should become educated about the basics of cosmetic surgery, you should get to know the surgeon and his areas of specialty, and he should work to determine what your goals are as a patient and develop a plan to reach those goals. In order to accomplish these tasks, the following steps will likely be taken

Step 1: you will be asked to complete a survey. This patient survey will give the doctor pertinent information about your medical history, and the areas of your body you would like him to address.

Step 2: You will take this survey into a closed door meeting with the plastic surgeon. At this time he will review the information in your survey with you, and clarify any issues which may require additional information.

Step 3: Using your medical history and goal information, the doctor can decide which surgeries you are a candidate for and give you some information about each. For example if your area of concern is your abdomen, your doctor is likely to give you information on both abdominal liposuction, and a tummy tuck.

Step 4: After discussion the possible surgical options, you may be asked to change into a dressing gown for examination. During this time the doctor can make very specific recommendations about the surgery required. You will continue the discussion until a specific plan for your transformation is complete.

Step 5: After changing into your own clothes, the doctor will help you establish a time line for your plastic surgery, which may include multiple procedures, and recovery times.

Step 6: You will need to spend time with our billing department to discuss payment options, and the possibility of billing insurance for part of the cost.
